If You Build It, They Will Come
— And Take It
Madonna sang, “Strike a pose, there’s nothing to it” 30 years ago. Fast-forward to 2020 and you can watch Jameela Jamil inexplicably judge the House of St. Laurent and others as they compete for Legendary status on HBO, and dance to House Music, turned EDM, with Kylie Jenner at Coachella.
What happens when the genius of Black and Brown LGBTQ+ people gets co-opted, dragged kicking and screaming from the counterculture into the mainstream? Who benefits when beauty born of pain, rebellion, and necessity becomes “palatable”? Who loses? How do we cope with our loss?
