LGBTQ+ Caregivers for Aging Family Members Support Group
Eight (8) Sessions beginning 4/25
Sundays: 7 to 8 PM
April 25th thru June 13th
Brooklyn Community Pride Center is partnering with Visiting Nurse Service of New York to facilitate an eight-week series of support sessions for caregivers for aging parents, family members, and allies.
Each session will have a different focus and will build on one another, although participants can also follow each session stand-alone:
April 25, 2021: By taking care of you, I take care of myself. By taking care of myself, I take care of you. Focus: Introductions and completion and discussion of a self-assessment questionnaire.
May 2, 2021: Understanding is the foundation of Love. Focus: How chosen families affect caregiving.
May 9, 2021: True love takes a lot of courage — it is a commitment to remove suffering and offer well-being. Focus: Feelings engendered around caregiving: discuss healthcare, service providers, and hospice.
May 16, 2021: Through mindfulness, you will find that you have even more reason to be happy than you thought. Focus: Discrimination in its many forms.
May 23, 2021: Everyone has the capacity to ‘wake up’ to the subtle sounds and sights, to understand and to love. Focus: Emotional, mental, and physical well-being, while being an LGBTQ+ caregiver.
May 30, 2021: The ground for action is to Be, Sit, Walk, and Eat in such a way that peace is possible in the here and in the now. Focus: LGBTQ+ Caregivers for aging parents, family and allies will Be, Sit, Walk, Eat mindfully.
June 6, 2021: Just as in our financial lives it is important to maintain a positive balance: Make sure your withdrawals are exceeding your deposits. Focus: Finding a balance: Self-Care Quiz and discussion.
June 13, 2021: How would I want to be encouraged right now? What would I want to hear? Focus: evaluation, discussion of what would be good to talk about in the next sessions, and stories of changes.
