SAGE is the country’s largest and oldest organization dedicated to improving the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) older adults.

Founded in 1978 and based in New York City, SAGE is a national organization that offers supportive services and consumer resources to LGBT older adults and their caregivers, advocates for public policy changes that address the needs of LGBT older people, provides education and technical assistance for aging providers and LGBT organizations through its National Resource Center on LGBT Aging, and cultural competence training through SAGECare. Headquartered in New York City, with staff across the country, SAGE also coordinates a growing network of affiliates in the United States.

COMMUNITY PARTNERS:

SAGE in NYC

SAGE was founded in New York City and has strong ties to our community across all five boroughs. In addition to building New York City’s first LGBT-friendly senior housing in Brooklyn and the Bronx, SAGE also offers unique programs and services for LGBT older adults.

Programs and Services

Our SAGE Centers offer a number of social activities and programs for LGBT older people in Manhattan, Harlem, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Staten Island. Besides offering congregate meal service, SAGE Centers provide health and wellness programs, discussion groups, entertainment, and more! You can find more information about all of SAGE’s Innovative Senior Centers by visiting us on the web at sagenyc.org.

In addition to SAGE Centers, SAGE offers Care Management Services. SAGE Care Management offers LGBT older adults and caregivers access to LGBT-affirming supports and programs across NYC.

SAGE also has a space at THE LGBT Community Center in Manhattan at 208 West 13th Street. The SAGE Community Room is run by volunteers and serves as a drop-in area for SAGE constituents and other members of The Center. Special programs include a Men’s Discussion Group on Wednesdays from 5:30-7PM and the SAGE Singers – a premier singing group – on Thursdays from 4:30-6:30. Find out more info on SAGE’s website.

SAGE Care Management Services

SAGE Care Management offers LGBT older adults and caregivers access to LGBT-affirming supports and programs across New York City.  In particular, SAGE’s social workers and case managers offer the following services and support groups:

Ongoing Services

  • Information & Referrals
  • Case Management
  • Benefits & Entitlements Assistance

  • Friendly Visiting

Support Groups

  • Caregiving
  • Bereavement
  • HIV Positive

For more information on our SAGE Care Management Services, download our brochure here.

Many LGBT older adults face the risk of social isolation, who are twice as likely to live alone, twice as likely to be single, and 3 to 4 times less likely to have children—and many are estranged from their biological families.  Friendly visiting programs are a proven way to alleviate this isolation and rebuild communities across generations. If you’re interested in volunteering to be a Friendly Visitor, download our brochure here.

Who Can Receive Assistance?

SAGE provides holistic coordinated care to LGBT older people and the people who support them. If you are an LGBT person age 60 or over (50 or over for those living with HIV/AIDS), SAGE can help you. If you are a friend, family member or partner—even if you are not LGBT or over 60—who has been caring for an LGBT older person, SAGE can help you as well.
