 POSITION: Executive Director, Brooklyn Community Pride Center

LOCATION: Brooklyn, NY

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:

The Brooklyn Community Pride Center is a not-for-profit organization created in 2008, whose mission is to provide a safe common space, offer physical and mental health services, social support, recreational and cultural programming, as well as be a hub of information for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals and families in Brooklyn. BCPC is a leading gay organization in the borough working to promote the empowerment, development and general welfare of the LGBT community. With an emphasis on gender, racial, and ethnic parity, the Center is committed to affecting positive change throughout Brooklyn and the LGBT community at-large.


ABOUT THE POSITION:

Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director has overall responsibility for financial and operational management of the organization and is responsible for executing the strategic priorities of the center as determined by the Board of Directors. The Center is currently leasing temporary program and office space, but is seeking to purchase and build out a permanent Pride Center in the Downtown Brooklyn area. This is an exciting opportunity for a visionary, energetic and strategic leader to help establish a permanent Center, create a sustainable funding stream for the organization and continue its transformation into the 21st Century umbrella service provider to Brooklyn’s LGBT Community.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Resource Development and Fiscal Responsibility

  • Fundraising and resource development are the primary responsibility of the Executive Director, working in collaboration with the Board of Directors.
  • Develop and expand relationships with government, corporate and institutional donors;
  • Assume primary accountability for securing resources needed to support the organization’s mission and strategic plan through individual and major donor cultivation, annual events, memberships, sponsorships and grant writing;

Organizational Management & Leadership

  • Develop and sustain programming consistent with the mission and strategic plan of the organization;
  • Develop work plans to implement the organization’s strategic plan;
  • Recruit, orient, supervise and train staff and volunteers, pursuant to organizational policy and procedures;
  • Motivate staff and volunteers to accomplish responsibilities and goals through empowerment and team work;
  • Develop and manage organizational budget in partnership with Board of Directors.
  • Provide overall administrative leadership to assure mission attainment and organizational sustainability.

External Relations and Outreach

  • Where appropriate, seek collaborative relationships with other providers to expand services to the LGBT community throughout the borough;
  • Develop and provide oversight for organizational communication and marketing plans;
  • Support organizational partnerships and programming in conjunction with partners;
  • Represent the Center to the public and work to increase awareness of the organization;
  • Cultivate key relationships on behalf of the organization through outreach and collaboration across the community;

Board Relations

  • Work in partnership with the Board and committees on appropriate issues, policies, and strategic direction;
  • Provide complete, effective, timely information and counsel to the Board to help its members make informed decisions;
  • Provide for measurement of strategic plan goals.

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Five or more years of professional experience serving as the leader of an organization or unit;
  • Demonstrated success leading and managing an organization through a period of growth, successfully meeting or exceeding organizational targets and driving significant impact;
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills, with deep experience inspiring, galvanizing and motivating diverse audiences while garnering their respect;
  • Proven fundraising experience with an ability to work well with government, individual donors, foundations and corporate sponsors;
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to develop productive working relationships across a wide variety of individuals and groups, both internally and externally;
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills, with the creativity to develop innovative solutions to a wide array of issues;
  • Entrepreneurial spirit with the ability to thrive in an environment that is characterized by significant growth and change;
  • Experience building and managing a budget and driving financial decision making;
  • Familiarity with the borough of Brooklyn and its LGBT community and organizations;
  • Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree preferred.

Other Desired Qualities

  • History of working with the LGBT community, with thorough knowledge of and commitment to LGBT issues and Brooklyn;
  • Nonprofit knowledge and experience, including an understanding of nonprofit finances, familiarity with the role of a nonprofit board, and the Executive Director’s relationship with the board;
  • Ability to provide direction and leadership related to real estate development and a capital campaign a plus;
  • Ability to work with community partners and the organization’s diverse constituents, as well as ability to develop a strong network with key figures in the LGBT community and beyond;
  • Enthusiasm and dedication to inspire staff, board, volunteers and donors;
  • Event planning and project management experience helpful.

COMPENSATION:

Competitive compensation, commensurate with experience.
